3.1. Breastmilk docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) correlates with DHA status of malnourished infants

چکیده
Objective: To investigate whether low docosahexaenoic acid (22:6ω3; DHA) status of malnourished, mostly breastfed infants is due to low ω3-fatty acid intake via breastmilk. Methods: The fatty acid composition of the breastmilk of 8 Pakistani mothers and that of the erythrocytes (RBC) of their malnourished children was analysed. Results: The milk of the Pakistani mothers contained low percentages of all ω3 and most ω6-fatty acids, compared with milk of Dutch mothers. Breastmilk DHA was positively correlated with infant RBC DHA and arachidonic acid (20:4ω6). Conclusion: DHA status of these malnourished children is strongly dependent on the ω3fatty acid intake from breastmilk. Augmentation of the infants’ ω3-LCPUFA status, or the ω3 and ω6-FA status in general, by supplementation is indicated in deprived circumstances with a difficult access to fresh fish. However, in terms of prevention, maternal supplementation of these LCPUFAs, preferably from early pregnancy onwards, may be a better option in these circumstances.

AIM To investigate whether low docosahexaenoic acid (22:6omega3; DHA) status of malnourished, mostly breast fed infants is a result of low omega3 fatty acid intake via breast milk. AIM To investigate whether the low docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) status of malnourished, mostly breast fed, Pakistani children can be improved by fish oil (FO) supplementation. METHODS Ten malnourished children (aged 8-30 months) received 500 mg FO daily for nine weeks. The supplement contained 62.8 mol% (314 mg) long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega3 series (LCPUFAomega3) and 22.5...
متن کاملEffects of a lipid emulsion containing fish oil on polyunsaturated fatty acid profiles, growth and morbidities in extremely premature infants: A randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND & AIMS The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of the parenteral emulsion SMOFlipid®, with 15% fish oil, with Clinoleic® on retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and other morbidities and growth, and to compare their impact on longitudinal serum levels of fatty acids. Retinopathy of prematurity, other morbidity and growth were correlated with each parenteral lipid supplement. ...
متن کاملSupplementation with 200 mg/day docosahexaenoic acid from mid-pregnancy through lactation improves the docosahexaenoic acid status of mothers with a habitually low fish intake and of their infants.
BACKGROUND/AIMS The supply of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6omega-3), important for fetal/infant neurodevelopment, depends on the maternal fatty acid (FA) status, which may be marginal in central Europe. Therefore, we investigated the effect of a daily vitamin/mineral supplement with and without 200 mg DHA from mid-pregnancy through lactation on the DHA concentrations in maternal and infant re...
متن کاملFeeding preterm infants milk with a higher dose of docosahexaenoic acid than that used in current practice does not influence language or behavior in early childhood: a follow-up study of a randomized controlled trial.
BACKGROUND The visual and mental development of preterm infants improved after feeding them milk enriched with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in amounts matching the fetal accretion rate. OBJECTIVE The objective was to evaluate whether feeding preterm infants milk with a higher DHA content than that used in current practice influences language or behavior in early childhood. DESIGN This was a f...
